Instructions For Design Program

Welcome to RODS1 Custom rod design studio.

Wraps, weaves, rods, reel seats, reels, fly rods. Butts, guides, and tips.

This tutorial is to help with using the tools in Microsoft paint or image editor that has the same tools in the edit program.

If you have ever copy and pasted anything. Then this will be easy to follow and get started.

Since this is a copy and paste program I would suggest making a lot of extra template pages to work on. When working in a template page. When you do a save as you can name that page, and after you save you will get a windows box that will ask do you want to save. Click the don’t save button and the original page will save unchanged. (ALWAYS REMEMBER TO SAVE ANY PAGE YOU TAKE FROM THE STUDIO WITH ANOTHER SAVE AS PAGE SO NOT TO CHANGE THE ORIGINAL PAGES, TO MAKE SURE NOT TO MAKE CHANGES TO ANY TEMPLATES OR PAGES IN STUDIO).

Rods1 Custom Rod Design Program…

To get started open program files folder. There are folders for independent rod parts. Independent parts folders contain parts that are ready to copy and paste onto rod blanks. The parts folders are titled to the part name of the rod part. Handles, grips, reel seats, fore grips, hook keepers, guides, and tips. Many of these parts have been resized to the different sizes needed to build a custom rod.

Other folders are going to contain ready design parts. These parts have a thread design already on the part. Example. (Guide design will have the thread design on the foot of the guide. These guides are ready to place on the rod blank. Note. (They may have to be resized to fit rod blank) See resizing parts.

There will be folders that are assemblies. There is a folder that has the handle, reel seat and fore grip already assembled and are ready to place on rod blank.

Rod Blank folder contains an assortment of blanks. Different colors and sizes. The lengths are marked in the title. When you open a blank template and select the ruler on that page the numbers on the ruler will be 3 or4 digits. Starting with 100. This represents 1 inch. Just ignore the last two zeros.

There folders that are templates for shapes, lines, and color. These can be used on a palate template so you can design your own thread designs are create you on parts. When using these templates. Save as and rename template and keep the original clean. Never alter the original uploads. SAVE AS AND RENAME TEMPLATE. Keep all pictures in folders the way they are and make a copy, then close the one you open from the program. Work on the one you just saved. This will keep your program files original for future use.

Quick getting started.

Open Program.

http://www.rods1studio.com/img1383.jpg

Open the rod blank folder and choose a blank that you want to start building on. Right click on picture

then select OPEN WITH. There will be a drop down of selection. Go down to OPEN WITH. Right click and there will be a drop down of options. Select PAINT. This will open that picture into a paint window. All Pictures that we are using in this program have to be opened in paint.

BLANKS

Drop down selection on blank template folder. You can see the curser

The above image shows a screen shot of a blank in the paint program. This is what was selected from the steps up to this point.

This is where you can start building your custom rod design.

The next step is making the page transparent. Shown in figure below.

Click select and there will be a drop down selection. Go down to transparent and click. You will see a check mark at the left side of the word transparent. Now that you have made the page transparent. When you add other images they will only show the image and not the back ground.

Opened above is the handle folder. Select desired handle and open in paint. This is the same steps you took when you opened the blank template.

After selecting the desired handle. Open with Paint and page will display. Choose the select tool you see circled in red. Place select tool on screen and completely capture the handle. Right click and copy the handle image.

The image above illustrates coping handle onto Blank template page. The best method for getting a good image with no background. Is to make sure the transparent has been selected. Now copy and paste handle on blank and move around to line up desire position.

Now that we have the handle in position we will keep adding components and build the custom rod. Now we will go and choose a reel seat and add it just like we did the handle.

The figure above shows a reel seat for the next part to place on rod.

As you can see the rod is starting to come together. As long as you don’t save the page you are working on you can undo as many times as needed to get back to where you want to be. The undo will erase your last step and erase backward everytime you click the undo.

This backward circle arrow is the undo Icon. When you want to change what you have done just click and remove your last step. If you have copy and pasted an image and want to start over. Just click the undo Icon and it will remove the pasted image. You can then recopy and continue working.

Above is a chart to indicate what tools are and how to locate them buy Icon. Most of these Icon are universal and you may have seen them on other programs.

Select is for copy and paste. Cutting and cropping images. Moving an image.

Select tools is a drop down and used for selecting all. Also this is where the transparent page tool is.

Undo is used to erase and remove the last step that was performed.

Typing Font is the used to write things on your page with different fonts.

Magnifier will let you zoom in and out on a selected object.

Fill will fill any area that is closed. If the area is open it will fill the whole page.

Eye Dropper will fill a small percentage of an area.

Pencil will gives you the ability to free style draw.

Eraser will erase anything that it passes over while holding the left button.

Rotate and Flip will do what it says. Rotate and flip 90 and 180 degrees.

Shapes.  Select a shape and it will make that shape while holding the left button.

Background Color is a right click function.

Main Color is a left click function.

After getting using these tools it will become easier to place images and build a custom rod. The next step is to design the wraps and place guides on the rod with the right placement. You may have notice there is a ruler on the pages. This ruler represents 1” for every number on the ruler starting at 100.

100 = 1”          1200 = 12”          2400 = 24”

If you open a page and the blank is 11000 this is representing a 9‘ nine foot 2” two inch rod.

At the top of the window there is a tab marked view. Click on this tab and the window above will show where the selection is for turning on the ruler. Normally the ruler is not turned on when you first open the Paint program.

If you ignore the last two zeros, you can see how 1” inch is represented by this ruler.

Going back to the folders we will take a look at more design tools and templates you can use to design on the rod you are building.

Above is where we started at the start of the program. The above image shows the design program folders.

After you open a template page and start working. The first thing is to go select the Transparent Icon to make all copy and paste transparent. If you don’t you will not be able to place overlays and see object to work with. When placing an image on page to use on your design. It is not going to be a clear image unless you copy and paste image to get the transparency. Example. If you place the image on a blank spot on page. Now you want to move image over the main image it will white out. You have to select image copy and paste. While image you just pasted is still boxed move over main image and place. After you are finished with an image such as line or chevron. High light with your select tool and cut to remove from page. When I am designing I will end up with several images around my work space. At some point you will run out of room on your work space and have to clean up and remove some images. You can make several pages at one time and work between them. Just do a save as and name the pages and copy and paste from one page to another.

Most tools from paint to image editor are the same. Your select tool is a box icon on the tool palate. The pencil and paint brush are pictures of these tools. The rotate vertical and horizontal are usually on a drop down menu. You will use these when you want to rotate a chevron from left to right or any image that is where you need it to be reverse to each other in your design. Some templates will have both the right and left side available. But if you make your design on chevron or image and you want the reverse image you can use the horizontal select and flip it. Copy the image and when it is in the paste select box click the horizontal to reverse it. There are blank shape template pages. You might want to make several extra copies so you have blanks to add your own custom images to.

There are a couple videos in the studio that are crude but if you watch them you will see how everything stated above will make more since. Also there are some instruction pages for using paint tools in the tutorial folder.

So in summary there are just a couple things that have to be remembered to work with studio.

                Make page transparent.

Save as page with new title. Keep original not changed.

Copy image from one location. Then paste to desire location you wish to place image.

Rotate image vertical or horizontal while still boxed.

Below are some screen shots to help view tools and actions.

Remember to make page transparent. Above you will see the drop down menu from the select button. At the bottom you will place a check box beside transparent by left clicking on transparent selection.

Above image you see the cursor over the select tool. Left click on Select tool  when activated it will be   highlighted.  Move to desired point of selection and left click on start of position and hold left click till you have surrounded image desired to copy or paste.

While holding the left click on key pad you can place select tool at start point to be select still holding the left click drag around image to copy and let go. Place cursor inside box right click and in selection menu choose copy, cut, or paste. When the selection is ready the cursor will change and look like this.  Hit enter and the action will be completed.

When placing hash box around an image to copy, try to stay as close to the image as possible.

The select tool  will be used regularly in this program. Copy, paste, and cut or the main functions used. When coping an image remember that the image will not be transparent unless the transparency is on the page.

Cutting and cropping an image is as easy or as hard as the precision of the designer. While holding the select tool you expand the hash box to the desired location to be cut. Select cut from drop down menu and hit enter.

This is a good time to mention the undo  and redo  tools.

Paste an image is easy just place cursor close to where you want to place image and right click and select paste. Image will appear on page. Choose select tool box in image place cursor in box hold left click and move image to desired location on page.

Now that we have the main image functions as far as copy, paste and position. We are going to rotate image vertical  and horizontal.   There is also a 90 degree left , 90 degree right , and 180 degree.   This is where you can rotate image right or left. This is helpful when making some of the designs.

 Vertical.

 Horizontal.

 90 Degree left.

 90 Degree right.

 180 Degree.

STARTING A NEW PROJECT.

First we are going to open a Microsoft Paint program. I added a template in the template folder that is a blank project template. To find this template on the main folder showing files locate the template folder.

Double click on template folder and open the next screen. This will show you all the templates in folder.

Open the folder that is labeled (blanks). Double click on folder and open.

Right click on (Blank project board 1.) in the select window you will see (Open With) click and you will get a box with programs associated to what can open this program. Select (Paint) and the Blank project board 1 will open in a paint program window.

Now we do not want to work on templates so the first thing we are going to do is (SAVE AS). A SAVE WINDOW IS GOING TO OPEN AND WE ARE GOING TO SAVE AS (YOUR PROJECT NAME). This will be saved to a folder you created for your designs. Ether in your files or a file created in the custom studio. I recommend saving into a file created in studio and keep everything in one design folder. But you get the idea that this is where you need to start filing your new projects and designs.

Now we can open an overlay that we want to work with and add place it on the project palate.

Open overlay template with paint as you did when you opened project board. At the bottom of your screen you will see an icon that shows a color paint icon. As you open multiple paint pages they will be added to this icon. You can place your cursor over icon and all pages that are open will show up in small thumbnails. You will be able to click on any page and bring it up on the screen.

This is the over lay we will use for this tutorial. Now we can use are select tool and copy and paste this overlay onto our project board.

Now we want to paste this overlay onto our board.

Now that we have pasted the over lay on to project board, we are ready to make our first entry onto board with a color image.

Following the same procedure to open the overlay, open this color chart in paint. Select color and copy and paste on to project board.

From color template we are going to copy and paste two colors to project board.

Using the select tool box around overlay image. Place cursor inside box left click and hold. Now you can drag image over color strip.

We added the two colors and now we are going to place overlay over the color and use the paint brush tool to eliminate the blue away from the design. By placing the paint brush tool over color (blue) and right click and the blue will disappear as long as the second color in color selection box is white. This is defaulted to white when you open paint. If you have never changed this before it will be set to white and there is nothing to change.

Now we have our first layer on image and continue to design with lines and shapes. This is where the videos will help. There are two videos in the tutorial folder that even though they don’t have sound they can show you how to continue your design.

Videos are also on front page of http://www.rods1.com top right of main page.
